Mental Retardation
“Mental retardation” was a term previously used to describe a developmental disability characterized by significant limitations in intellectual functioning and adaptive behavior. However, it’s now considered outdated and replaced with the term “intellectual disability” in medical and clinical contexts. Intellectual disability encompasses a wide spectrum of cognitive impairments and challenges in everyday functioning. These limitations manifest before the age of 18 and affect an individual’s ability to learn, communicate, and perform daily tasks independently. The severity of intellectual disability varies, and individuals with this condition may require various levels of support and intervention to lead fulfilling lives, emphasizing inclusion and promoting their strengths and abilities.
